Keywords and Keyphrases Used In Search Engine Optimization ... What Next?

Remember you are aiming to get to position 1 on page 1 for your future web page. You hope (NO! YOU INTEND) to lead the competitors on this keyword. Take a look at this next picture. The searched for keyword (phrase actually) was water fountain pumps. There were 28,500 competitors (SERPs) for the result at the time I wrote this. I know about 28 people every day (10,220 per year) search the Internet using this search term.

If the answer for any keyword is that lots of people are searching ( POPULARITY IS HIGH) and there are only a few competing web sites (COMPETITION IS LOW) then you have found a very good keyword (maybe a gold mine in disguise) on which to focus a web page design. The brass garden fountain was one of these possibly but we only had half the story we knew there was very little competition. We did not know if it was popular.

To drive this point home here are two keywords To review

Keyword Popularity is number of people searching for this phrase every day and keyword competition is number of web pages found on search for this keyword using inverted commas.

  • Garden ponds designs ... popularity = 48 competition = 6

  • Aquatic information ... popularity = 0 competition = 1,760

Let me state the obvious because it is often not too obvious looking at many web sites out there: The more people looking for your type of product/service/assistance who visit your web page then the greater is your chance of making that sale. There is no guaranteed sale but there is a chance of a sale. On the other hand no visitors guarantees no sales!

This is why good keyword selection is critical. You just have to attract visitors to your web page and in maximum numbers. Using the above example creating a web page optimised for aquatic information might sound like a good idea to an expert on aquatic information. The fact is no-one else does.

Result: wasted time effort and money and no sales leads to frustration.

It is well known that only a very small percentage of web visitors actually buy. Let us assume that a maximum of 1% of web visitors who see your offering buy it. Now look at this list below. This alone will help you understand why so many companies and individuals are disillusioned by web selling. The web is not to blame of course. The blame must be centred on the web design. This also assumes the product is in demand naturally.

This list shows number of visitors to web page showing product on offer per month ... number of products sold per month at 1% conversion rate

  • 100 ... 1

  • 1,000 ... 10

  • 10,000 ... 100

  • 100,000 ... 1,000

Your challenge is to get LARGE numbers of visitors to your web and in particular to the web page you offer the sale on which is normally NOT the page where the surfer comes across your product. For most of us this can only possibly be done by having numerous good keywords which allows creation of numerous good web pages written to beat the competition.

Let me tell you now so you can read on with excitement rather than trepidation. It takes only 30 minutes or so to create a very good keyword optimised attractive web page after you have done your basic research. Even 50 web pages would not take more than a week. You can also publish your web site and add pages to it over a period of time. What is important to realize is that you need MANY good keywords.

This is a prerequisite if you seek success!

Still not convinced?

  • In my project my very best single keyword is searched for 563 times per day every day on average.

  • My top 10 added together are searched for 4,599 times per day

  • My top 50 added together are searched for 10,771 times per day

So I initially designed web sites containing 50 pages 1 for each of these selected keywords. Hopefully this makes sense to you.

Did I tell you I have identified 2,000 + important keywords so far and still going strong. Visitors use well over 25,000 keywords to find my web pages since many are quite unique combinations.

To really rub this in consider the following: it is estimated that 10% of the searchers on any keyword click through on the search result occupying position 1 on page 1 of the search engine results. Only 5% click through on position 2 on page 1. By the time you get to position 20 on page 2 hardly any searcher is clicking through to that search results web page. This is a bit scary but how wonderful to know that herein lies a way of slaughtering most (if you are really fortunate ALL) of your competition. Most of your competitors do not know what you have now learned.

Quite simply you have a very important competitive advantage which has cost you very little to achieve.
